Happy Easter!

It was a very busy day of finding our baskets from the Easter Bunny, going to Dubuque for Brunch with my family and then returning home for egg hunting and dinner with Randy's family. We would not change a thing though and are very happy to be able to share these moments with so many people that we love!

Aidan's new trick

Recently while feeding Aidan some applesauce with a meal he attacked the spoon and made a chomping noise. I laughed and grabbed the camera to take the attached video:
Though it was funny at the time, I may soon be regretting giving this so much attention as he has been repeating this performance at every meal since!

"I can make that my own!"

I don't know where this saying came from, but recently whenever there is a commercial on tv for some toy or we are shopping and Reese sees something she would like, she will exclaim, "Mommy! I can make that my own!" She doesn't save this commercialism for herself, whenever there is something that she thinks somebody else would like, she will ask, "Mommy, you make that your own?" This is just one of the many examples of how Reese talks like a child at least twice her age. It is so funny sometimes to hear the things that come out of her mouth and to think that she is only going on 3!

Randy and I call each other "babes" and a few times Reese has called one of us by this pet name, but it actually comes out sounding like "bapes".

Finally, this week Randy was out of town on business and Reese wanted to talk to him. We called his cell and when the female voice came on the line announcing that the person we intended to call was unavailable, Reese was indignant, "That's not my daddy!" I held the phone up to her ear and tried to get her to leave him a message, but he ended up with me in the background saying, "Tell Daddy you love him." Then I told her to give daddy a kiss and she planted a big smooch on the phone, so cute!

Aidan is not one to be left out while his outspoken sister takes the spotlight! He has been blabbering up a storm lately. One of his favorite things to do is stand at the windows and watch the cars go by or watch tv and point while blabbering on and on. I respond with, "Really, Aidan", or "Reese do you know what he is saying?" He does have a few words down pat though. He can clearly say "Up", "Da", and "Aubrey" (sounds like Ah-brey). Yes you read that right, he calls his dad "Da" and me "Aubrey", just like Reese did!

Our trip to Florida

Before we had children, my husband and I participated in that rite of passage for all college students, Spring Break! I myself went to Chicago, Il; Panama City, Fl; South Padre, Texas; and Pensacola, Fl. All of these trips were memorable in their own way, but none of them will ever compare to our recent trip to Pensacola as a family of four!

It all started on the afternoon of March 12th. We had planned on leaving soon after I got off work at 1pm, but my husband got held up in a meeting and we didn't actually leave until closer to 3pm. We had been driving in the car for about an hour when I commented to my husband that the kids were being very well behaved and that depending on how things went, maybe we should just drive straight through instead of stopping and spending the night in a hotel as we had planned. BIG MISTAKE!!!! We stopped for dinner around 6pm at a McDonalds with a play place so that the kids could get out and stretch their legs a little while we ate. About 45 minutes later we got back in the car and I fed the kids their meals. Then my stomach began to grumble and churn. I tried to make it to the next planned bathroom stop, but couldn't! My husband grundginly pulled off the road so that I could make a pit stop. After that was taken care of, we were back on the road. When we next stopped for gas, we set up a bed in the back of the van so that my husband could sleep while I drove for a little while. It was at that time that the children started to get crabby and need to be entertained. We drove for about 1/2 an hour trying to get the kids quieted down to play in their seats or sleep, but it just wouldn't work. Randy was upset because he needed to be able to sleep so that he could drive the stretch between 4-6am when we would be nearing our destination. Frustrated we pulled over and switched back drivers (almost turning around to go back home in the process!) I tried to entertain the kids and get them to stop crying so that I could take a nap and do the driving early in the morning. We made it a few hours without too much trouble. Then Aidan started crying and I could not find a pacifier. We stopped at a Wal-Mart and Randy ran in to buy a package of pacifiers. This worked for a little while. Then around 2 am the kids still had not really gone to sleep and were being really crabby. We decided that they would hopefully be able to sleep if we just had beds, so we pulled over and checked into a hotel. We got to our room and laid everybody down and they just cried and cried! One of us needed to be able to get some sleep, so I took the kids down to the parking lot around 3 am and put them in the stroller. We walked around the parking lot for about an hour and neither one of them even had heavy eyelids. I was so exhausted, I had to take a nap. I put the kids into their carseats, so as not to wake my sleeping husband in the comfortable hotel bed, turned the car on, locked the doors, and took about an hour nap. At about 6am the kids were awake and I decided to go back to the room, since my husband had had about 3 hours rest. The kids would not play quietly or sit to watch tv or go to bed, so we just ended up waking him up. We packed everything up, grabbed a quick bite to eat and got back in the car to start driving for the day. We stopped once for gas and then another time around 10 am. We went to another Wal-Mart in hopes of buying a DVD player to replace ours which was not working very well, so that the kids would be entertained. I played with the kids in the toy aisle, while Randy checked out the DVD players and got some lunch to eat in the car. We settled back into the car, sans DVD player, and had some lunch while we drove. After eating both kids fell asleep and we finally arrived at our hotel on the beach around noon. We immediately went to the pool to find the rest of my husband's family. We got out Reese's swimsuit and she was off and swimming! Grammy took Aidan to get him ready while we took all the luggage up to the room and changed into our swimsuits. Unfortunately for Grammy, Aidan had pooped through his diaper and all over his clothes. She gave him a quick bath in the bathroom and he was swimming when we finally got down to the pool to join them. We swam for awhile, then went to play in the sand. Finally, we cleaned up and went to town to eat dinner and get some groceries for the week. When we finally returned to the hotel, we dressed the kids in their pajamas and put them to bed where they finally slept! After a 21 hour trip with the kids on very little sleep, we fell into our beds and fell asleep.

Have been away for too long! I don't know where the last 3 months have gone!

Aidan is 10 months old now and such a little man, no longer a baby! He has been pulling himself up to stand on furniture and can even take a few steps with that support. He has a hollow leg and eats more than the rest of the members of our family! I can't imagine what it will cost to feed him as a teenager! He also recently learned to clap and loves to clap for himself or whenever it will gain him attention. He is such a little ham and loves to make other people laugh or smile.

Reese is 2 1/2 and so mature for her age. She is so smart and looks older than her 2 1/2 years. Lots of people that we run into while running errands assume that she is at least 4. Then they look at me like I am a terrible parent when I have to change her diaper or she is sucking her thumb! When I get the chance I always announce her age to lessen the disapproving glances that I get from others. We have been working on the potty training and it is going better than my previous attempts over the past 16 or so months. She has her good days and her bad days. We mostly only have trouble making it to the bathroom for number 2. I really cannot wait until this stage is over! She can be so sweet a times, and melts my heart with her rendition of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". About 2 weeks ago she only sang, "Twinkle, twinkle star" over and over again. Now she can sing the whole song, and does over and over again. I have tried to videotape it, but as soon as I pull out the camera she gets shy and stops!

Hopefully now that the holidays are over life can get back to a more normal pace!

Poopy training

I have been trying to teach Reese how to use the potty for over a year now! She absolutely will not sit on the potty anymore to pee. I have tried every trick in the book from offering rewards (candy and stickers), making a big deal out of any success, involving grandparents and family in her success, buying a second toilet that plays music and has fun toys, and even peeing on her potty chair myself to demonstrate how it works! In order to get her back to using it, I have been catching her mid-poop and getting her to finish on her potty in the hopes that succeeding at something will encourage her to use the potty to pee on also. Tonight the mess in cleaning up afterwards almost made me want to quit until she is 4 and ready to start school!

Mini me

Reese follows me around and does everything that I do and repeats most of what I say. This is really funny and cute when she calls my husband, her father, babes.

It is really sweet when her little brother Aidan is crying and she tells him, "It's ok Aidan, I'm right here."

It can be a little annoying when she tries to mother him and physically moves him away from something he should not have.

It is also a little bit sad because it just shows how much more mature and older she is getting each and every day!
